Many people are afraid of the long-term consequences of Corona.

Tiredness or exhaustion can be a consequence, but also indicate diabetes.

Düsseldorf – Omikron has been the clearly dominant corona variant for several months, reports the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

While many initially believed that Omikron would cause a milder course of the disease and a lower rate of hospitalization, researchers have now come to a new conclusion.

According to a Harvard study, omicron is not so harmless after all.

Long-term consequences such as headaches, fatigue and concentration problems are not uncommon after infection with the coronavirus.

Sometimes it can even trigger diabetes.

Instead, it might even be just as dangerous as the previously dominant Delta variant.

Added to this is the great concern of possible long-term consequences.

Finally, some sufferers report significant physical and cognitive limitations.

These include:

  • concentration and memory problems

  • shortness of breath

  • physical exhaustion

  • Disorders of taste and smell

  • sleep disorders

  • muscle weakness and pain

However, the symptoms cannot always be clearly assigned and often appear very slowly after a corona infection.

It becomes even more difficult if they are also signs of another disease.

According to a new study by the German Diabetes Center, a Covid disease can even trigger type 2 diabetes.

For this purpose, the researchers evaluated data from over 70,000 patients from over 1,000 German practices.

Long Covid or Diabetes?

Have your long-term sugar levels checked

It has been shown that people who were previously infected with corona have a greater risk of developing blood sugar disease than other respiratory diseases.

"Basically, severe infections such as pneumonia make the body less sensitive to the body's own insulin," explains Prof. Baptist Gallwitz (64), diabetologist at the University Hospital in Tübingen, to the Bild newspaper.

"However, since insulin is responsible for lowering blood sugar, this makes the body more susceptible to type 2 diabetes. A Covid 19 infection further exacerbates this risk."

So if you feel very tired, worn out and exhausted after a Covid infection, you shouldn’t necessarily just blame Long Covid.

Instead, it is advisable to have your doctor test you for diabetes by taking a blood test to be on the safe side.

The long-term sugar value (HbA1c value) is examined and gives a good overview of the sugar level over the past three months.
