Not just price increases: Consumers have been paying up to 43 percent less here since Corona

During the last two years of the corona pandemic, consumers have had to accept many price increases - but not when it comes to fast internet.

Prices for electricity, gas and heating oil have risen sharply in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic.

After the global economy collapsed in 2020, the recovery of the global economy last year led to a sharp increase in energy requirements, as reported by international broadcaster

DW

in early 2022.

There is only one area in which prices do not seem to have exploded in the last two years, despite the Corona crisis - and that is

fast internet

.

A current Verivox analysis shows that the costs have actually tended to fall: fast connections have become cheaper or have remained the same in price, and there have only been selective price adjustments for tariffs for normal users.

The trend towards working from home increases the need for fast internet

The four network providers Telekom, Vodafone, O2 and 1&1 as well as various regional providers will offer

numerous internet tariffs with gigabit speeds

in 2022 - in 2019 such tariffs were not yet standard.

For a long time, high-speed lines were popular with business customers and gaming fans in particular.

Due to the home office, many employees now also need faster Internet with stable lines at home in order to move large amounts of data - for example for video chats or cloud computing.

Three years ago, a gigabit connection via the cable network at Vodafone Kabel cost EUR 69.99 a month,

today customers only have to pay EUR 39.99 for it

– almost 43 percent less.

There is a fiber optic gigabit tariff at 1&1 for EUR 69.99 per month, at Telekom and at 02 for EUR 79.99.

Here the prices have been stable since 2020.

“The ever-increasing demand for data is leading to a significant increase in interest in high-bandwidth connections.

As a result, the price-performance ratio also improves,” says Jens-Uwe Theumer, Vice President Telecommunications at Verivox.

Internet tariffs: Since the corona pandemic, normal users have had to pay more in some cases

For normal users, at least the DSL tariff from 1&1 has become more expensive: instead of 34.99 euros in 2019, customers will pay ten euros more a month in 2022 for DSL 100 - i.e. an

Internet tariff with a bandwidth of 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s)

.

Such a connection is nowadays sufficient for common applications.

In return, customers receive 10 free months in this tariff.

There was no price increase for the cable tariffs with 100 Mbit/s.

"

At Telekom, Vodafone and O2, the prices for tariffs with 100 Mbit/s have been stable for years,

" says Theumer.

"Existing customers make phone calls and surf the web under the same conditions as in 2019. The price adjustment from 1&1 is at least partially offset by generous free quotas."
