If colorectal cancer is detected early, the chances of recovery increase immensely.

However, many people do not take advantage of screening tests.

They also?

The Robert Koch Institute reports that one in 19 women and one in 15 men will be diagnosed with colon cancer during their lifetime.

Around 27,000 women and 34,000 men are affected every year.

However, if detected early, most types of cancer can be effectively treated.

Therefore, the same applies to colorectal cancer:

go to regular medical check-ups.

The legislator has created the possibility of early detection and preventive examinations from the age of 50, as informed by the German Cancer Society.

An invitation is issued by the health insurance companies

, it is said.

The health insurance companies cover the costs for early detection of colon cancer from a certain age.

An overview of

colorectal cancer screening recommendations

:

  • Stool test and colonoscopy for women and men over the age of 50

  • Men over the age of 50 get a large colonoscopy every 10 years or between the ages of 50 and 55 an annual stool test and from the age of 55 a stool test every 2 years from the health insurance companies.

  • Health insurance pays for women between the ages of 50 and 55 to have a stool test every year and from the age of 55 a large colonoscopy every 10 years or a stool test every 2 years.

  • If you have colon cancer in your family, your health insurance will usually pay for a colonoscopy even if you are younger.

If there is blood in the stool, see a doctor immediately

“In most cases, the preventive colonoscopy provides a clear finding and the certainty that there is a high probability that you will not develop colorectal cancer in the next ten years.

Then, before the next regular preventive check-up in ten years, there will

only be a new check-up if there are complaints

,” informs Professor Leopold Ludwig from the board of the professional association of resident gastro-intestinal doctors (bng).

According to a bng press release, the situation is different if polyps or adenomas are found during an examination.

Then, in consultation with the examining gastrointestinal doctor, early checks are indicated.

Even if there is a family risk of bowel cancer, one should be examined more closely, Professor Ludwig is quoted in the statement.

However, anyone who suffers from

stomach

and intestinal pain, discovers blood in their stool or

has alternating diarrhea and constipation should always consult a general practitioner immediately, who will usually refer you to a gastroenterologist.
