As early as 2019, the EU passed a regulation on mandatory assistance systems for cars.

From July 6, 2022, vehicles must have a lot more for the sake of safety.

Munich – From July 6, 2022, numerous new rules for road traffic will apply in the EU.

The draft for more safety on European roads was already adopted in 2019.

The regulation on mandatory assistance systems for new cars will soon come into force.

Cars 2022: EU sets basis for mandatory and automatic alcohol immobilizer

From July 6th, all new vehicle types must have new assistance systems such as speed assistant, emergency brake assistant, lane departure warning or reversing assistant.

The basis for an automatic alcohol immobilizer is also regulated.

The aim of the rules is more safety on the road with fewer deaths and serious injuries from avoidable accidents.

Various safety systems are already installed in the cockpit of many new cars – the regulation is intended to prevent accidents across the board.

From July 7, 2024, the following assistance systems will then be mandatory for all new vehicles.

EU and traffic 2022: These assistance systems will soon be in all cars:

  • Intelligent speed assistant (ISA: Intelligent Speed Assistance)

: In the future, the assistance system will prevent drivers from exceeding the speed limit.

It has digital road maps and uses traffic sign recognition to determine whether speed limits are being observed.

If the limit is exceeded, the system draws attention to this with acoustic and visual warnings.

  • Emergency brake assistant

: From 2022, an emergency brake assistant is to become mandatory in new vehicle types.

It should independently recognize dangerous situations and brake the vehicle to prevent collisions.

  • Emergency

Lane Keeping Assist : The Lane Keeping Assist (LKA: Lane Keeping Assist) is already known to many, but from 2022 the Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELK: Emergency Lane Keeping) will become standard in vehicles.

It intervenes even more aggressively when the vehicle threatens to veer off the road or into oncoming traffic.

  • Device for installing an alcohol immobilizer

: As early as 2019, the EU countries decided that from 2022 new cars must have a device for connecting an alcohol immobilizer.

First of all, it should only be a standardized interface.

If necessary, the alcohol immobilizer can then be installed.

  • Fatigue detection

: In order to prevent microsleep at the wheel, a drowsiness detection should analyze the driving behavior of the driver and use acoustic and visual signals to indicate that breaks must be taken.

  • Reversing

assistant: When reversing, the assistant is intended to warn of pedestrians or other obstacles.

  • Seat belt warning system

: The warning system has been mandatory for the front and rear seats of new type-approved vehicles since September 1, 2019.

From September 1, 2021, this regulation will apply to all newly registered cars.

  • Accident data memory (black box)

: As with the "black box" in an airplane, cars should also have a data memory in the future with which the course of an accident can be reconstructed.
