The tank discount is to come on June 1st as part of the relief package planned by the federal government.

The ADAC therefore warns of overloading the gas stations.

Kassel – Gasoline prices at gas stations have risen enormously because of the Ukraine conflict, and the EU's oil embargo against Russia isn't exactly improving the situation.

The fuel discount planned by the federal government is intended to help consumers and companies to cope with the increased energy costs - as is the 9-euro ticket for regional transport.

Accordingly, on June 1st, petrol should become cheaper thanks to a reduced energy tax.

For example, diesel could become around 17 cents cheaper per liter and petrol around 36 percent cheaper.

But what sounds good to consumers raises some concerns for others.

Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck warned, for example, that petrol could become scarce at times due to the oil embargo.

Duraid El Obeid, chairman of the Federal Association of Free Gas Stations, expressed concerns about the tank discount.

Tank discount from June 1st: ADAC warns of long queues at gas stations

He fears a rush of historic proportions to German gas stations from June 1st.

The ADAC also made a similar statement to Business Insider.

Accordingly, motorists should be prepared for a rush at the gas stations at the beginning of June.

Drivers would very likely have to put up with a long wait to get to the pump at all.

The tank discount will come on June 1st and petrol will be cheaper.

The ADAC therefore expects a high rush to gas stations.

The ADAC reports on its website that since the start of the Ukraine war, petrol prices have "taken a real roller coaster ride".

In the first week of the war, from the end of February to mid-March, Super E10 rose by around 45 cents per liter and diesel by around 65 cents.

That would correspond to a price increase of 23 euros for Super E10, 32 euros for diesel if 50 liters are tanked.

Since then, petrol and diesel had given up around half of their growth by mid-April.

A year-on-year comparison shows the price difference clearly:

Month

Super E10

diesel

April 2020

117.1 cents/litre

108.2 cents/litre

April 2021

146.6 cents/litre

130.9 cents/litre

April 2022

197.0 cents/litre

202.4 cents/litre

Rush to gas stations: The ADAC advises not to drive with an empty tank

According to information from the ADAC, a liter of Super E10 currently costs 2.036 euros on average nationwide (as of May 11).

3.4 cents more than in the previous week.

If you have to fill up with diesel, you can breathe a sigh of relief: drivers currently have to pay an average of 2.049 for one liter

Pay in euros – 2.6 cents less than a week ago.

Gasoline prices are said to be lower again on June 1st because of the tank discount.

According to Business Insider, a spokesman for ADAC advises refueling before June 1st.

"As a precaution, you should keep enough residual fuel in the tank and not drive with 'the last drop'," they say.

The ADAC is currently not assuming that petrol could become even more expensive - unlike El Obeid, who fears that longer transport routes could lead to an increase in petrol prices.

According to the ADAC, it is not foreseeable what economic effects the Ukraine war will have.
