Training: Experts criticize the lack of career orientation in schools

Studies or apprenticeship? In the schools there is not enough information about dual training, says DGB Vice Elke Hannack. Meanwhile, the situation on the training market is only hesitantly returning to normal.

The numbers on the training market are still well below the level that was reached before the corona pandemic.

In 2021, a total of 473,100 new training contracts were concluded - 5,600 more than in 2020, but still 52,000 fewer than before the 2019 pandemic.

This emerges from this year's federal training report, which was approved by the federal cabinet on Wednesday.

The number of places on offer increased by 8,800 to 536,200, but was also below the pre-Corona level.

According to the report, a problem that has existed for a long time remains unsolved: On the one hand, thousands of training positions are unfilled, on the other hand, many interested parties remain unplaced.

The German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) is watching the development with concern.

"Even if it looks like a slight recovery at first glance - the training market continues to suffer from the consequences of the corona virus and from structural problems," said the deputy DGB chairwoman, Elke Hannack, of the dpa news agency.

More information, more collaboration

The number of new training contracts is still well below the level before Corona, said Hannack.

It is therefore necessary to fight for every training position so that the recovery lasts: “Anyone who wants to have skilled workers must also train them.”

The DGB Vice attests that the education system has a lot of catching up to do.

A lot of potential is wasted, especially at the transition between school and training, said Hannack: »The goal must be to support young people individually in their search for a training position.

Above all, improved career orientation at general schools is important for this.« Schools, employment agencies and chambers should work together better here.
