(S+) Illiteracy: How Gerd (65) learns to read – podcast

Gerd Prange is one of six million. So many adults in Germany cannot read and write properly. Gerd wants to change that and goes to school at the age of 65.

In a way, the story of Gerd Prange is a typical one: he has difficulties with the material at school, but nobody cares.

Neither his teachers nor his parents, who cannot read and write well themselves.

In the eighth grade he left school without a degree, without being able to read or write.

If you had to summarize why Gerd didn't learn to read at school, three words would suffice: fell through the net.

In the next few years, Gerd struggles through.

Even if he never hides it: Many of his friends and acquaintances do not know that he cannot read and write properly.

In 2010, Gerd decides: something has to change.

Around six million adults in Germany cannot read and write properly.

You can hear what it's like when a 65-year-old goes back to school in the new episode of SPIEGEL Daily.
