Old, cooked rice shouldn't just end up on the plate.

During storage, a bacterium can form, from which toxins can develop.

Munich – Rice is considered to be unbeatably storable.

In addition to noodles, flour and sugar, hard grains of rice are the best way for people to store food in a small space for a long time.

As long as the grains are in a dark, dry place, they can even be stored for several years without their quality suffering.

However, the situation is different if the rice has already been cooked.

Then amateur cooks have to be careful and eat the rice as quickly as possible.

Rice is the perfect accompaniment to dishes such as curry, stuffed peppers or meat skewers.

Sushi would even be unimaginable without the right rice.

In addition, rice is easy to prepare and easy to buy in advance.

People with gluten intolerance in particular often use rice in their everyday life because it does not contain gluten.

A pack of rice should never be missing in the kitchen.

According to the Federal Center for Nutrition, the following types of rice can be distinguished:

  • Long-grain rice: Takes on a loose, dry shape when cooked, which is due to the high gluten protein content.

  • Short-grain rice: Particularly suitable for rice pudding.

Takes on a sticky, soft form as it is low in gluten.

  • Sticky Rice: Is particularly good for sushi and other Asian dishes that are eaten with chopsticks.

Assumes a highly sticky and adhesive structure.

  • Risotto rice: The trick is to cook the risotto rice so that it stays al dente on the inside but is creamy on the outside.

One way to do this is by constantly stirring the pot.

  • Fragrant rice varieties: Jasmine rice, for example, is well-known and is characterized by a very special aroma.

Jasmine rice tastes particularly good with fish dishes or seafood.

  • Boiled rice: A good solution when you need something quick and you don't want anything to burn.

The portions are already packed, due to the floating bag the rice grains cannot stick to the pot.

All types of rice can be stored indefinitely when uncooked.

Hobby cooks only have to be a little careful with oblong, brown brown rice: it has a high fat content and a limited freshness date.

Old rice can make you ill: keep your eyes open when warming up

As long as the rice has not been cooked, there is no danger.

However, hobby cooks should be careful if they want to reheat rice that has already been cooked.

According to the Bavarian Consumer Center, rice almost always contains Bacillus cereus bacteria.

The spores of these bacteria cannot be harmed by the heat of the boiling water.

If the rice then cools down in the room for a long time, this provides the best conditions for the bacteria to multiply.

Since the bacteria form toxins, warming up and eating can lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea.

This means that cooking fans must ideally let cooked rice cool down in the refrigerator or heat it consistently above 65 degrees Celsius.

This means that the bacteria cannot multiply as well.

Rice that was cooked more than a day ago should not end up on the plate at all.
