The diocese of Essen has suspended a priest on suspicion of sexual abuse.
The diocese announced that the man was accused of having committed sexual acts on a young person more than 30 years ago.
An investigation by the public prosecutor's office against the accused had previously been discontinued due to the statute of limitations.
The victim then turned to the independent contact persons of the diocese of Essen, said a diocese spokesman.
The accused was then confronted with the allegations and admitted to the crime.
He was then immediately suspended from duty.
Bishop Franz-Josef Overbeck initiated a preliminary investigation under canon law.
