The last frosty nights of spring are traditionally expected for the Ice Saints.

In the days that follow, there is a lot of gardening work for hobby gardeners.

In Germany there is a long tradition that frost-sensitive plants in particular are only allowed outside after the ice saints.

The

Ice Saints

are a weather phenomenon that is expected to occur

between May 11th and 15th

every year .

At the same time, cold polar air flows to Germany, which can lower the temperatures again below the zero-degree mark.

Not all plants like that, which is why hobby gardeners prefer not to bring certain plants outside until after the ice saints, or at least protect plants such as lettuce and co. well against frost.

After all, an old farmer's rule says: "Never plant before the cold Sophie", the last day of the Ice Saints on May 15th.

Which plants are only allowed outside after the ice saints?

After the ice saints, you can finally garden to your heart's content.

In May there are all sorts of gardening jobs to do anyway.

So you can finally

plant vegetables

and

herbs

that you have grown indoors in the bed or raised bed, such as varieties such as:

  • cucumbers

  • tomatoes

  • paprika

  • zucchini

  • pumpkin

  • beans

  • basil

When it comes to flowers, those who are sensitive to the cold can finally go outside.

These include summer flowers such as

geraniums (pelargoniums), sunflowers, asters, zinnias, fuchsias, tuberous begonias

or marigolds.

Bring overwintered flowers outside after the ice saints

Even flowers that have overwintered in the basement or greenhouse can now be brought outside.

This should make

geranium

lovers particularly happy, who can now finally put their balcony boxes from last year back on the house.

So that your flowers get the move outdoors, please do not put them in the blazing sun right away - rather slowly get used to the sun

in the shade or semi-shade

.

Don't forget to fertilize and remove the dead shoots and branches.

The summer blossom dream will not be long in coming.(as)
