Louis-Ferdinand Céline's unpublished story, "War", was the best-selling novel this week in France, ahead of two stars, Virginie Grima

Incredible unpublished story by Louis-Ferdinand Céline, "War" creates the surprise by settling from the first week as the most purchased novel in France, according to the ranking of the best weekly GfK sales for "Hebdo Books".

If we take the Top 20 of all formats, the controversial writer who died in 1961 is second behind number 101 of the “One Piece” manga saga.

But it steals the show from two giants of French literature, Virginie Grimaldi and Franck Thilliez, who both released their new novel the same week.

The incredible history of the manuscript surely contributed to its success

Printed in 80,000 copies, "War" by Céline was published by Gallimard and was written in 1933. It was found in one of the two large suitcases abandoned or forgotten at home in 1944 by the author of "Voyage au bout of the night" when he hastily fled Paris.

This incredible story surely contributed to the success of the book, says a bookseller in the Ile-de-France region.

“We knew that Céline was going to find her readership but to be number 1 in front of two publishing stars, I hadn't expected it.

But it's true that the market is complicated with the war in Ukraine and that bookstores are a bit empty at the moment”.

The same week as Céline actually arrived in bookstores two highly anticipated novels.

“We will have that left” (Fayard), by Virginie Grimaldi, nevertheless takes third place in the Top 20. The most widely read French novelist in France, just behind Guillaume Musso, also sees her previous novel “Les possible” released in the Pocket Book to settle in seventh place.

Nice double also for Franck Thilliez, the biggest seller of thrillers in France who, with "Labyrinthes" (Fleuve editions) and "1991" (Pocket), is respectively 5th and 12th.
