The air transfer of a Covid patient not only looks dramatic, the photo of the nerve-wracking process has now been honored with an award: Photographer Andreas Koerner, who shot the picture on behalf of SPIEGEL last year, was awarded the London Photography Award for his work .
The photo, which appeared in the cover story of SPIEGEL issue 49/2021, won in the "COVID-19 Related Photography" category.
It shows how the DRF Luftrettung flies a patient infected with the corona virus to a clinic in Weißenburg, Bavaria, by helicopter.
Emergency doctor Nicole Zederer monitors the patient's vital signs while he is being ventilated.
Recognize honorable efforts
The London Photography Awards recognize outstanding achievement in photography.
The "COVID-19 Related Photography" category is intended to recognize the "honorable efforts" with which healthcare workers are braving the pandemic, it said.
Andreas Koerner is a freelance photographer and photojournalist.
He has worked for various media, including the German Press Agency (dpa) and Getty Images, where he has been part of the team since 2013.
Koerner's work has also appeared in the New York Times and the Washington Post.
Koerner also works regularly for SPIEGEL.
