Is it a breakthrough for electric cars?

A team of researchers has developed an ultra-rapidly charging, high-energy-density lithium-ion hybrid battery.

Korea – Researchers at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have developed a novel battery for use in electronic devices and electric vehicles.

"The hybrid lithium-ion battery, which has a high energy density and can be charged quickly with a high power density, overcomes the limitations of current energy storage systems," said Professor Jung-Goo Kang from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

"This will be a breakthrough."

According to a report by the industry portal pv magazine, the scientists managed to synthesize a porous hollow carbon structure with a large surface area - by changing the orientation of the polymer resin used from linear to twisted.

Accordingly, when the twisted resin was carbonized, more micropores were formed.

This creates a carbon structure with a surface area 12 times larger than when using conventional linear resin.

E-Car: New battery could be groundbreaking

The carbon structure created by this process was used as the cathode material.

The researchers also created an anode from a hollow carbon nanosphere material with the germanium intercalation, which is expected to reduce the degradation of the energy storage device and maximize the dispersion of the lithium ions.

The resulting hybrid lithium-ion battery has an energy density that is comparable to that of conventional lithium-ion batteries.

At the same time, the power density is comparable to that of a capacitor, so the battery can be recharged within a minute.

Lithium is a chemical element and could be obtained in Germany for millions of electric cars.

The research results of the KAIST team were published under the title "Coiled Conformation Hollow Carbon Nanosphere Cathode and Anode for High Energy Density and Ultrafast Chargeable Hybrid Energy Storage".

They could point the way for the future of e-car production and solve structural problems.

Because: Among other things, electricity providers warn against excessive loads from e-cars.
