Neglect at Haemek Hospital: Lung tests that endanger the lives of patients | Israel Today

2022-05-15T20:01:40.417Z

Following the revelations in "Israel Today" about the difficult situation at the hospital in Afula, it is now known that senior doctors also manage the hospital: tests for cancer and lung diseases are conducted in internal wards - and patients may be infected with severe infections • Haemek:

New findings about neglect at Haemek Hospital in Afula, which serves about one million Israelis in the valleys and the Galilee:

Invasive tests for cancer and lung disease (bronchoscopy) are performed on hospital beds in inpatient wards, in a way that endangers patients' lives and can lead to immediate and life-threatening infections.

All this even though senior doctors have repeatedly warned the hospital management for years about what is happening.

This emerges from a series of conversations and written testimonies from doctors at the hospital.

Bronchoscopy examinations should usually take place in a special examination room, and not in the inpatient wards.

During the test, the doctor examines the airways using a tube with a camera inserted into the airways through the nose, through which the doctor sees the condition of the lungs and airways.

The test is performed under local anesthesia or anesthesia, and the doctor takes a sample from the lung to diagnose infections or cancerous growths.

In other cases its purpose is to treat airway obstructions.

However, according to complaints from doctors at the hospital, the tests do not take place in a dedicated test room that includes all the sterile equipment that can prevent the transmission of serious infections to patients, but are conducted inside the hospital's internal wards, improvised, using dirty and contaminated equipment. For examination and inserted into the body of the patient is transferred to the ward where the examination is performed by the staff physically, and not in a way that will protect it from damage or transmission of infections.

All this is contrary to the instructions and guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Clalit Health Insurance Fund, which is responsible for the hospital.

There is no dedicated treatment room

It also turns out that there has not been a dedicated room in the "Valley" for several years that is suitable for these tests, in terms of the medical equipment and sterility required in the test, and that for several years senior doctors have been warning the hospital management about the difficult medical results. Solved also solved the problem. Israel Today also learned that a senior doctor recently warned the hospital's management that the doctors are trying to provide the service under impossible conditions and we are failing in the various procedures, and this is the result - these tests do not receive a proper response.

Under the current conditions and in light of the justified complaints about the infections that reinforce the allegations that we have constantly raised and not treated - we are not able to perform bronchoscopies.

We need to take care of storage and transfer conditions worthy of equipment, with a room suitable for carrying out the operations. "

Inappropriate conditions

The struggle of the department directors in the "Valley" has been exposed in recent weeks in "Israel Today" and as part of it the department directors raised serious and unprecedented allegations of ongoing neglect, discrimination and discrimination of the hospital by Clalit and Health Ministry managements. Particularly serious are the risk to children's lives due to extreme burdens, complaints from doctors that corona patients in critical condition died due to lack of treatment, and complaints from patients with rare blood diseases and the doctors treating them, who have repeatedly lamented in recent months. Medical, and on inappropriate treatment conditions in patients.

The "Valley" and the Clalit Health Insurance Fund stated in response that "The Valley" is ranked first among the hospitals in Israel in the model of prevention of acquired infections by the Ministry of Health, thanks to the many initiated actions we take in this field.

In this case, too, an initiated control was carried out with the aim of improving work processes, and indeed, from the moment of writing the report, most of the comments have been corrected. "
