It was a cable fire with serious consequences: After a 1,000-wire copper cable was damaged in Hamburg on Friday night, long-distance traffic was significantly impaired at the weekend.
Passengers were affected nationwide.
Then on Monday the good news: "Long-distance traffic in Hamburg started again this morning," said a railway spokesman.
However, there may still be deviations from the timetable for individual trains.
Passengers were therefore asked to obtain information from Deutsche Bahn's digital information media before setting off.
The cable fire happened near the Sternschanze station, on the so-called connecting railway, which runs from Altona via Diebsteich, Sternschanze and Dammtor to the main station.
It is one of the busiest routes in Germany.
The repair of the copper cable was very expensive, according to the railway.
All communication on the route between the interlockings runs via this cable.
Switches and signals are controlled via it.
On several popular long-distance routes, trains were canceled in some cases, and the routes on others were shortened.
In some cases there were delays of several hours.
A spokesman for the federal police ruled out arson as a possible cause of the fire on Monday.
"We have absolutely no indications of external influence." Rather, they are investigating because of a possible technical defect or self-ignition.
