The fight against weeds in the garden often seems endless.

Instead of chemicals, however, very simple home remedies are sufficient.

Kassel – For many, weeds are one thing above all: annoying.

It is not only a plague for hobby gardeners, many other plants also suffer from it.

Because they not only take up space for the desired ornamental plants in the garden, but also important minerals and water.

This means more work for anyone who would like to have a perfectly manicured garden and a healthy, strong lawn.

Weeds are often removed by scarifying and weeding, or controlled with chemical herbicides.

But instead of resorting to chemicals, simple home remedies work wonders.

Weeds in the garden: Weeds are a plague for some

Not every herb is directly a weed, that often depends on the place where it grows.

Normally, a weed is primarily a wild herb and can be quite beneficial.

So horseradish is not welcome, while it is a practical crop in the vegetable patch.

According to Gartenjournal magazine, there are almost 1,000 plants that are defined as weeds.

Moss, sorrel and dandelion are also included.

The unwanted plants can occur both annual and perennial.

An overview:

Weeds in the garden: Removing weeds from the lawn is often nerve-wracking and takes time

The problem with such, sometimes unwanted, wild herbs is that they require far fewer nutrients than grasses.

They often grow when the soil is already deficient in nutrients, as the magazine Mein Schönen Garten reports.

At this point, the lawn no longer has enough nutrients to continue growing and regresses.

Weeds, on the other hand, still have enough available.

As a result of this counterplay, the uninvited plants continue to proliferate.

Dandelions or moss can be removed by hand, using a rake, or a weed puller.

Moss and other weeds can also be easily removed from the garden when scarifying.

But there are other measures as well.

Household remedies for the garden: Remove weeds from the lawn without chemicals

Chemical agents are often not necessary to remove weeds from the garden.

Simple household remedies such as lime, charcoal ash, hot water or black foil can work wonders.

Mowing and fertilizing, for example with a fertilizer you make yourself, also help to keep the lawn healthy and to destroy weeds or keep them away.

If you make sure that the grass is never shorter than four centimeters when mowing, the weeds will not get enough light.

The grass is then high enough and provides shade.

Foil that can be placed over the weeds also has a similar effect.

If the herb does not get enough light, it cannot grow and dies back, advises the magazine Mein schön Garten.

  • General measures:

Cover with black foil, check the pH of the soil and add lime if necessary

  • Dandelion:

    Regular sprinkling with charcoal ash

  • Root weed: Douse

    with hot water

  • Thistles: Prune

    before the next rain

Tips and tricks: household remedies against weeds in the garden

In addition, the level of lime in the soil is important for the growth of weeds, which is why adding lime can help.

A sample can be taken to find out if there is a defect.

If the pH is between six and seven, that's fine.

As soon as it drops below five and a half, it should be improved.

Regular sprinkling of charcoal ash helps against dandelions, for example.

Root weeds are easily removed by pouring boiling water over them.

The Garden Journal recommends pulling out the dead part and dousing the rest again with boiling water.

You can also use leftover pasta water for this.

Thistles can also be considered a nuisance in the garden.

They are easier to remove if you clip the stems before the next rain.

If the inside of the thistle gets wet, it will rot and die.

With the help of these tricks, weeds can be removed more easily and, above all, in an environmentally friendly manner if necessary.

Plant pests, such as aphids, eat away at flowers and vegetables in the garden.

However, no chemicals are required to get rid of them.
