A consultative referendum to involve Roman citizens on the choice of the waste-to-energy plant.

This is the proposal launched by the Italian Radicals to the mayor of the capital who receives the OK from M5S.

"We ask Gualtieri to consult the city on the waste-to-energy plant of 600 thousand tons per year through a consultative referendum because history teaches us that without popular consent no plant can be built. With popular legitimacy everything would be simpler", explains Massimiliano Iervolino, secretary of the Italian Radicals. .

"We can not afford another 5 years of inaction" for this "we ask for a consultative referendum to open a debate in the city. If he were to win, he would avoid criticism, because he would have popular legitimacy", added Iervolino.

The radicals' proposal was not addressed only to Gualtieri, the party today in fact launched the same appeal "to Letta and Conte, but also to the environmental forces".

The 5 stars also respond to the referendum call.

"I share the idea of involving citizens not only to test the effective consensus on the hypothesis of an incinerator in Rome", said Roberta Lombardi, M5S councilor for Ecological Transition and Digital Transformation of the Lazio Region.

The pentastellata councilor, initially at the head of the no front and now the most open to dialogue with the mayor, today stressed that the referendum must not be translated "into a mere 'either or', in the absolutist form 'incinerator yes' - incinerator no '"but must have"

Meanwhile, at a European level, Gualtieri collects the approval of Frans Timmermans: "We are in contact with Gualtieri, we must find a solution" to the waste problem in Rome, "putting them on the ground is a very bad solution", said the commissioner at the European Green deal stressing that a solution can also be found "with a waste-to-energy plant if done in a sustainable way".

But the local dem front, at least the one close to Rome and therefore more interested in the plant, shows the first cracks.

Today the Pd of Pomezia, a municipality bordering the area of Santa Palomba where the waste-to-energy plant should be built, voted on an agenda in the city council, promoted by M5S, which in fact opposes the plant.

The directors of Fdi and Lega also appear in the 19 votes in favor of the Odg and against the waste-to-energy plant.
