(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 16 - Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is the new president of Somalia.
The new leader was elected by MPs and senators who voted under a tent erected on the perimeter of Mogadishu airport, placed under curfew, where security forces are omnipresent.
Mohamud had already led the country from 2012 to 2017.
The victory for the new president came after a two-round marathon vote involving the 36 candidates broadcast live on TV.
In the end, the parliamentary officials counted more than 165 votes for Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, enough to beat outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed aka Farmajo, who along with the winner and two other candidates had qualified for the second parliamentary vote.
