Young singer Olivia Rodrigo and rapper Drake are the big winners at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards - but none of them even bothered to get to the event in Las Vegas on Sunday night.
The 19-year-old Rodrigo, who just last month won three Grammy Awards, picked up seven awards at a Billboard ceremony, including in the categories of lead singer of the year, new artist of the year and for her debut album "Sour".
Drake has won five awards, including for Leading Artist of the Year and in the rap categories, and has increased his record as the most decorated artist in the history of the Billboard ceremony with a cumulative total of 34 awards throughout his career.
Among the notable winners at the ceremony were rapper Kenya West with six wins, but not in the main categories, Justin Bieber with five wins, the K-pop band BTS with three awards and Taylor Swift with four wins, and a cumulative career total of 29 awards, second only to Drake .
In addition, the Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny won the award for the leading Latin artist, Elton John won together with Doa Lipa the award for performing the dance on their joint song "Cold Heart" and the Italian rock band Monskin won the award in the rock category for their novelty song "Beggin". The Lifetime Achievement Award, known as the Icon Award, was presented to R&B singer Mary J.
Blige, when the real surprise was that the person who presented her with the award was Janet Jackson, who took the stage to much applause from the audience before she introduced Blige.
The awards at the ceremony are based on the sales achievements and attendance at Billboard Magazine charts in the past year of the nominated artists.
The vast majority of the wins were announced in a tic-tac-toe before the live broadcast even began, which was mostly musical performances, including by Ed Sheeran, Phi Didi, who also hosted the ceremony and rapper Travis Scott, in his first performance in six months since the AstroWorld disaster.
