The manufacturer Emmi is discontinuing the sale of its Onken brand products in Germany.

This probably also means the end for the return of the cult quark "Frufoo".

Munich – Distribution of the Onken brand in Germany will be finally discontinued at the end of June 2022.

"The decision to withdraw our Onken range from the German market was not easy for us," Elisabeth Wagner-Wehrborn, Managing Director of Emmi Germany, is quoted as saying on

Lebensmittelzeitung.de

.

The Emmi boss cites the limited growth potential, insufficient profitability and high energy intensity of the existing plants as reasons.

The end of the brand also means the final end of the hope that the cult quark "Frufoo" will return to the market.

Many adults certainly remember the cult snacks of their childhood.

The fruit quark has already disappeared from the refrigerated shelves of the German food trade.

That was in 2004. Quark connoisseurs then demanded his return for 15 years.

Kult-Quark: Petition on Facebook in the five-digit range

Manufacturer Emmi was unable to withstand the pressure from consumers.

With a petition on Facebook, users collected likes in the five-digit range.

That convinced the manufacturer.

In 2019, Onken reintroduced the cult snack.

But instead of great jubilation, disappointment broke out among the fans.

“The Frufoo has landed.

Banana Strawberry Not a toy, different cup shape, craft tips on the back.

May the shitstorm begin,” posted a Frufoo fan on Twitter.

And other fans also criticized that the new quark was very different from the product from childhood.

A real shitstorm followed.

The cult quark flopped and was withdrawn from the market a short time later.

Kult-Quark: Onken business in Germany of marginal importance

Overall, the Onken business in Germany is less important for the Swiss milk processor.

The Onken business in the UK, on the other hand, seems to be doing better.

The brand is well positioned there and is even one of the leading providers of large-format yoghurts.

Onken will continue to exist there, the company says.

In Germany, the company prefers to focus on segments such as ready-to-drink coffee with Emmi Caffè Latte.
