Elden Ring is not only an incredible success with critics.

The role-playing game is selling so well that it even surpasses the long-running Call of Duty.

Tokyo – Before its release in February 2022, hardly anyone doubted that the Elden Ring would be a success.

Many critics gave From Software's RPG enormous accolades, praising the game to the skies and back.

What is surprising, however, is that even the general public is flocking to such a notoriously difficult and sprawling game.

Recent numbers show that Elden Ring has outperformed even crowd-pleaser Call of Duty in sheer sales over the past three months.

Elden Ring: More sales than Call of Duty Vanguard in the last 12 months

Where does the information come from?

The American analyst Mat Piscatella is responsible for the current sales figures for the Elden Ring and Call of Duty.

Piscatella, who works for the market research company NPD, has shared his latest figures for video games and console hardware for fiscal year 2021 via Twitter.

In addition to sales of the current consoles PS5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch, the most successful games of the current and previous year were also discussed.

How did the games sell?

It's often pretty certain that the current Call of Duty will be one of, if not the best-selling game of the year.

With Call of Duty Vanguard, however, the series lost a bit of its fan appeal.

In the 2021 calendar year, Activision's shooter was again number 1 in sales, but fell far short of the numbers of its predecessors.

With the release and massive success of Elden Ring, CoD now paints an even worse picture.

As Mat Piscatella's data shows, Elden Ring has enjoyed a much stronger release than Activision's long-established shooter series.

In the 12 months between April 2021 and April 2022, Elden Ring sold more units overall than Call of Duty Vanguard, although the former only released in February 2022 and Vanguard had a lead of nearly four months.

Elden Ring: In the US before Call of Duty, also a success worldwide

Is Elden Ring the more successful game?

The sales figures shared by Mat Piscatella are for the US market only.

Globally, Call of Duty could continue to be the top dog on the market, but there are currently no exact numbers.

However, all this should not mean that Elden Ring is not a success on the global market.

Bandai Namco Entertainment announced in its last financial report from the end of April 2022 that the role-playing game has sold a total of around 13.4 million copies.

Elden Ring has become developer From Software's best-selling game in just two months.

What is the future of both games?

For Elden Ring, From Software already seems to have plans to add new content to the game this year.

According to some fans' discoveries, a planned DLC area could already be in Elden Ring that just needs to be filled with content.

Call of Duty, on the other hand, could be a hit again this year.

Infinity Ward and Activision are currently working on Modern Warfare 2, which could see a trailer reveal in June.
