A manufacturer is recalling its chocolate with almonds, honey and sea salt nationwide.

Consumers were at risk of liver and kidney damage when consuming the product.

Munich - Due to a possible health hazard, myChoco GmbH is recalling the item "Full milk chocolate (cocoa: 31 percent at least) with almonds, honey and sea salt, 180g", with the batch number 22067 and the best before date June 8, 2023.

As the company states in a press release on its website, the item may have high levels of aflatoxin B1 and total aflatoxin B1+B2+G1+G2.

This increased aflatoxin content is due to the almonds contained in the product.

The item was sold nationwide via food retailers - primarily via branches of the retail chains Edeka, Globus and Rewe - as well as via the company's own online shop.

Product recall: consumer advocates warn of mushroom toxins

Aflatoxins are naturally occurring fungal toxins (mycotoxins).

A distinction is made between at least 20 naturally occurring aflatoxins, of which aflatoxin B1 is considered the most dangerous for humans.

In addition to aflatoxin B1, the toxins B2, G1 and G2 and the derivatives M1 and M2 found in milk are of greater importance, warns the consumer

website Produktwarnung.de.

We advise against consumption of the affected product and are publicly recalling the product as a precaution.

The focus is on chronic effects, such as kidney or liver damage, which, however, occur above all when aflatoxins are ingested over a comparatively long period of time.

However, acute health impairments due to the intake of aflatoxins are extremely rarely observed in humans, myChoco explains.

Nevertheless, the manufacturer advises against the consumption of the product and is publicly recalling the product as a precaution.

Customers who bought the item in question get their money back in the supermarkets - even without presenting the receipt.

Only recently has the confectionery manufacturer Ferrero had to recall its surprise eggs from the market in large numbers.

The reason for the recall was salmonella that got into the products.

The discounter Penny also withdrew its nut snacks in March because aflatoxin B1 was found in them.
