Delivery bottlenecks at Aldi, Rewe, Edeka and Co.: Due to panic buying, some groceries on the supermarket shelves will soon become scarce and more expensive.

Kassel – In Germany, panic buying means that the shelves at discounters such as Aldi, Lidl and Edeka are empty.

Behind the purchases is apparently the fear of not being able to get groceries for your own household. "At the same time, consumers are aware that everything is becoming more expensive, so they want to stock up at the cheapest possible prices," suspects a spokesman for the Real hypermarket chain to the newspaper Welt.

There are still major supply problems with sunflower oil.

"The supply situation is still difficult and tense," says the Rewe Group, to which the discounter Penny also belongs.

These bottlenecks are likely to remain for the foreseeable future.

"Sunflower oil production is declining, so it will continue to disappear from the shelves," says Gerhard Brankatschk, Managing Director of the Association of the Oilseed Processing Industry in Germany (OVID).

Aldi, Rewe and Co.: No delivery bottlenecks for flour in Germany

Germany's dealers are looking for alternatives on the market.

For example, Rewe reports that sunflower oil is now sourced from Italy and Hungary, among others.

Nevertheless, gaps on the shelves are still inevitable.

Lidl had also recently reported delivery bottlenecks.

Unlike sunflower oil, flour is not scarce in Germany, at least the Association of the Grain, Milling and Starch Industry (VGMS) assures: "As long as the bread shelves are full, there is also flour," says Managing Director Peter Haarbeck to Welt.

And that is the case everywhere.

Germany supplies itself with the so-called bread grain and does not purchase any goods from Russia or the Ukraine.

For wheat, the self-sufficiency rate is 130 percent.

"The supply of flour is secured," says Haarbeck.

"The mills have stored enough grain and are getting enough supplies."

Flour is missing at Edeka, Aldi and Co.: Hamster purchases are the reason for delivery problems

The fact that flour is still missing on the shelves is only due to hamster purchases.

“The necessary flour is there.

However, the packaging machines for the classic one-kilogram bags are working at the limit.

So more doesn't get into the packaging and thus into the shops quickly enough," says industry representative Haarbeck.

There are increasing signs that the supply situation is easing.

“In the case of flour, the situation is increasingly normalizing,” reports dealer Real.

The VGMS also expects filled flour shelves.

"There's no need to panic," says Haarbeck.

In the case of canned tomatoes, on the other hand, delivery problems are becoming apparent in the coming months.

Some suppliers are already reporting delivery cuts, as reported by the Lebensmittelzeitung.

The reason for the bottlenecks are rising energy prices and delivery problems with packaging such as bottles and cans.

Edeka, Rewe, Aldi, Lidl and Co.: Dairy products are becoming more expensive

In addition, some farmers in Italy are currently switching to more lucrative crops - such as fodder maize, bread wheat and durum wheat.

Italy is by far the most important supplier of tomatoes that are canned for the German market.

In addition, canned food manufacturers have announced price increases.

There has also been a continuous price increase for dairy products in recent weeks.

Now there is the next leap: The price range in retail is now 3.09 to 3.39 euros.

And: Industry experts suspect that the price spiral could continue in view of the high energy and raw material prices.
