(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 18 - Four key climate indicators (greenhouse gas concentration, sea level rise, ocean warming and acidification) have reached new records in 2021. This is another clear sign that human activities are causing changes on a planetary scale on land, seas and atmosphere, with long-lasting and harmful consequences for sustainable development and ecosystems.
This was supported by the World Meteorological Organization (Wmo) in its report "Global climate status in 2021", released this morning.
The report confirms that the past 7 years have been the warmest on record.
2021 was only one of the 7 hottest due to the "La Nina" phenomenon earlier this year.
This had a temporary cooling effect, but did not reverse the overall trend of rising temperatures.
The average in 2021 was around 1.11 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
