Biniam Girmay leaves the Giro d'Italia the day after his victory in the 10th stage, the first of a black African cyclist in the stage race.
The organizers announced it with a tweet.
Girmay had injured his left eye, hit by the Prosecco cork on the podium.
"Bini will be waiting for you soon on our roads" is the wish of the Giro.
Girmay had already made history in late March, with success in Gent-Wevelgem, becoming the first African rider to win a cycling classic.
Giro, Girmay greets: 'Sad for the retirement, now I think about next season'
GIRMAY GREETINGS: "THANKS TO ALL FOR THE SUPPORT"
"Thanks to my team, to all the staff for the support they gave me before and after yesterday's incredible stage".
Biniam Girmay - with a short video message on the Intermachè-Wanty-Gobert twitter page - greeted the Giro d'Italia, after retiring.
The winner of the 10th stage - historic first time for an African runner in the pink race - had injured his eye on the podium of the awards ceremony, hit by the cork of the sparkling wine.
In the video, the left eye of the Eritrean runner is not blindfolded and appears to be in good condition.
Girmay encouraged his team-mates to reap more successes, thanked all the fans who showed him affection and said he was "a little sad" about the retirement, but also happy because the accident had no serious consequences.
"See you soon"
