(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, MAY 18 - "We propose to integrate the significant short-term aid provided to Ukraine so far with a new exceptional macro-financial assistance, up to € 9 billion in 2022".

This was stated by the president of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

"But we also need to think about a broader reconstruction effort: the EU has the responsibility and strategic interest to lead this reconstruction effort. EU leaders invited us to reflect on this at the Versailles Summit: the principles of reconstruction should combine investments and uniforms ", he specified.

The EU also proposes "a reconstruction platform jointly led by Ukraine and the European Commission that brings together EU member states, other lateral or international donors, international financial institutions and other partners who share the same ideas".

Commission president Ursula von derLeyen added.

"The objective of this platform would be to agree the direction of travel and ensure the maximum synergy of all efforts: these investments will help Ukraine to emerge stronger and more resilient from the devastation caused by Putin's soldiers".
