Many Ferrero products have been subject to a global recall due to salmonella.

Now the confirmed infections have become known.

Kassel – The recall of many chocolate products from the Italian confectionery manufacturer Ferrero has caused a stir and sharp criticism in recent months: Salmonella was discovered in buttermilk tanks as early as December 2021 during checks at a Ferrero factory.

Despite the hygiene measures implemented, many chocolate products were contaminated at Easter.

Now the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has published the confirmed cases of salmonella poisoning.

As the ECDC reports, there are 266 confirmed cases in Europe.

There are also 58 suspected cases.

Children under the age of 10 are most frequently infected with salmonella, and around 41 percent of all those infected have been treated in hospital.

The EU authority wants to continue to monitor developments.

EU authority announces salmonella cases after Ferrero recall: products could still be in circulation

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) first discovered the bacterium Salmonella Typhimurium in December 2021 in a Ferrero factory in Arlon, Belgium.

Appropriate hygiene measures were taken in the factory at the time, and another salmonella test was then negative.

Ferrero launched a major recall campaign in April, just before Easter.

Hundreds of cases of salmonella have previously been linked to Ferrero products from the Arlon factory across Europe.

Shortly thereafter, the Belgian plant had to close.

Several cases of salmonella were reported in the UK as early as mid-February, according to the ECDC.

Despite the recall and the closure of the factory, chocolate products contaminated with salmonella could still be in circulation, according to the ECDC.

The EU authority also pointed out that some cases may not have been registered.

More than 260 salmonella cases in Europe: consumer organization criticizes Ferrero's behavior

Australia and Canada were also affected by the recall.

New Zealand Food Safety Deputy Director-General Vincent Arbuckle warned of infection with the bacteria: "The effects of Salmonella infection can be serious, particularly in children under the age of five, adults over the age of 65 and people with a weakened immune system." In Great Britain, a three-year-old became seriously ill with a salmonella infection.

Just a few weeks later, in May, another confectionery manufacturer also had to initiate a recall: Strauss/Elite chocolate products could be contaminated with salmonella.

The fact that Ferrero is said to have known about the contamination with salmonella for a long time led to sharp criticism of the confectionery manufacturer.

"If such a mistake happens, the population must be warned immediately," said Andreas Winkler from the consumer organization Foodwatch in early April.

In his opinion, personal responsibility and self-monitoring by the manufacturers are not sufficient, "transparency obligations for authorities are necessary so that cases like Ferrero must be made public immediately".

Consumers also feared salmonella contamination of Nutella nut nougat cream.

However, the confectionery manufacturer was able to reassure German consumers: Since the 1960s, Nutella has been produced for Germany and the northern European market in a plant in Stadtallendorf in central Hesse, not in the affected plant in Arlon.
