(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 18 - A car with no one driving comes downhill, throwing the iron fence of the kindergarten to the ground in Pile, a hamlet of L'Aquila, and in a few moments the kindergarten courtyard was transformed into most insecure place for a child.

The car surprised the little ones while they played between the slides and the plastic merry-go-rounds.

Some escaped but others were run over, some stuck.

Among the six immediately loaded on a stretcher, one did not make it, despite attempts at resuscitation towards the hospital: the toll is of a 4-year-old child who died and others of the injured, one of whom was in a reserved prognosis.

A Passat swooped into the garden where inside there was a boy who is no more than 10 years old.

His mother had left him alone in the car, parked in the street while she went to pick up her little brother from kindergarten, but the car quickly picked up speed downhill, perhaps accidentally unleashed by the boy himself or perhaps with the handbrake never activated.

These hypotheses will have to be evaluated by the investigators.

At that moment there were over a dozen children in the kindergarten garden, when around 2.30 pm the

car broke through the fence.

In addition to those in clothing, other children are in shock and have scratches that are caused during the escape.

"It looked like a Dante's circle: when we arrived we found people crying in the street and the crying of the children that made our hearts stop. Around us the ambulances and the police cars, the sirens.

Aquilama hospital are also out of danger.

"Tommaso was a very sweet child - says a mother - They often hugged each other with my daughter both when they arrived at school and when they went out, in a truly exciting image. Now we have to stay close to them to protect them from trauma but we have to hug around Tommaso's family and the wounded. ".

The story has also affected the world of politics.

Among the many, the condolences of the ministers of education, Patrizio Bianchi, of equal opportunities and of the family, Elena Bonetti and of the Regional Affairs, Mariastella Gelmini.

The mayor of L'Aquila, Pierluigi Biondi, proclaimed city mourning.

The teachers of the school are trying to better manage the situation, welcoming the parents of the children, starting with those remaining involved in the investment.

"The priority - they say - is to avoid the children who witnessed the scene being traumatized, both by the accident, with the car that broke through the garden gate, and by the comings and goings of ambulances and rescue vehicles. With some children we tried to pretend that it was a game, or at least to minimize, explaining that today the parents came to pick them up early. But how difficult it is ".
