It's summer and a barbecue is coming up?

But you prefer to eat pizza?

No problem, you can do both together.

If you know how.

Pizza fans will rejoice: Instead of sweating in the kitchen in summer because the pizza has to be baked in the oven, you can simply prepare your favorite meal outside on the grill.

Because yes, you can also

grill pizza

!

It's a creative change from the usual grill suspects: meat and sausages, corn on the cob, grilled cheese, zucchini, etc. Grilling works best when you have a

grill with a lid

, which means it only takes a few minutes to cook a pizza.

Only for the yeast dough you have to plan a little more time in the preparation.

Psst ... or you can use ready-made pizza dough from the refrigerated section.

But here comes the recipe with homemade dough first, you can try it and adjust it if necessary.

Grill pizza: You need these ingredients for 6 mini pizzas

For the dough:

  • 1/2 cube of fresh yeast

  • 200 ml lukewarm water

  • 1 pinch of sugar

  • 500 grams of wheat flour

  • 1 pinch of salt

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For covering:

  • 200 g canned diced tomatoes

  • salt and pepper

  • fresh basil

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 1 clove of garlic

  • 125g mozzarella

You can also use vegetables or sausage for the topping, chopped up into small pieces of course.

Please note, however, that the ingredients have to be cooked through relatively quickly, since the pizzas don't sizzle for long on the grill.

Grilling pizza: how it works

  • For the yeast dough

, crumble the fresh yeast into the water, add the sugar and stir until the yeast and sugar have dissolved.

Knead flour, salt and yeast water in a bowl.

Then add the olive oil and knead for about 10 minutes until the dough is elastic.

  • Prepare the flatbread:

Cover the bowl with the yeast dough and let it rise for about 30 minutes; its volume should double during this time.

Divide the dough into 6 portions and roll them out thinly on a floured work surface.

Alternatively, you can use your hands to gently pull the dough into a thin circle.

  • For the topping:

Season the diced tomatoes with salt, pepper, basil and olive oil.

    Squeeze in the garlic clove.

    Shred the mozzarella.

    Lightly oil the grill grate.

  • Now it's time to grill:

The grill must be prepared and at the right temperature!

Place the flatbreads on the grill grate.

Bake them (covered if necessary) until the batter starts to bubble, about 2 minutes.

If the pizza base burns too quickly from below, you should reduce the heat or raise the grid higher.

  • Cover and finish grilling:

Turn the flatbreads over and cover all with mozzarella and the prepared tomatoes.

If you have a lid, close it now and finish grilling the mini pizzas until the cheese is melted.

This should be the case after 2 to 3 minutes.

  • And the grilled pizzas are done!

Afterwards everyone can decorate their mini-pizza with other fresh herbs and enjoy.
