From spring onwards, the lawn should always be watered well to stay fresh and strong.
To ensure that your lawn grows vigorously and shines in a lush green, it must be watered regularly from spring onwards.
However, the timing of this is crucial.
A lush green lawn, free of brown or yellow spots - that is the dream of every hobby gardener.
In order for this wish to come true, the
lawn must be watered regularly when it is dry
to avoid damage.
In the following, we will show you which lawn sprinkler is suitable for your garden and how often and for how long you should water it.
Which lawn sprinkler is suitable for my garden?
With small lawns, it is often sufficient to provide sufficient moisture with a watering can or garden hose.
However, this method is quite laborious.
In larger gardens, a lawn sprinkler helps to optimally irrigate the green area - and you save a lot of time and energy on top of that.
Two lawn sprinklers in particular have proven their worth for the home garden:
Swivel sprinkler, also
called square sprinkler:
This model is suitable for square areas and is probably one of the most popular in German gardens.
The water jets here are arranged on a bar that swings back and forth in a specific mode.
Impulse sprinkler or impulse sprinkler:
This lawn sprinkler distributes the water in a circle or just at a fixed angle.
How do I know if the lawn needs to be watered?
Lawns have to be watered regularly, especially in hot temperatures, which is necessary given the local climatic conditions, especially in summer.
In principle, however ,
the lawn should be watered regularly
from spring to autumn .
If it is particularly dry in winter and there are long frosts without snow, you should also water on frost-free days.
This is how you prevent damage caused by drying out.
Incidentally, spring is also the best time to scarify the lawn, i.e. to free it from moss and thatch.
The blades of grass show whether your lawn needs water: if the leaves no longer straighten up on their own after stepping on the lawn, it's time to get started.
If the first
leaves look limp and have a slight blue tinge
, this is also an unmistakable sign that the lawn needs water.
Unfortunately, most hobby gardeners only become active when the grass is already showing the first signs of dry damage.
However, it then takes a very long time before the lawn is lush green again, because the blades of grass have to form new leaves first.
Best time to water the lawn - morning or evening?
It is obvious that the lawn should not be watered in the midday heat: the water would evaporate immediately.
It is better to only water the lawn in the morning or evening.
If you have a choice, the
best time to water your lawn is in the morning
Excess water can then evaporate better during the day.
In the evening, on the other hand, the accumulated moisture can promote fungal diseases and mold growth.
On top of that, voracious snails are lured into their garden, which they then have to fight back with difficulty.

Optimal duration: How long does the lawn sprinkler have to run?
When watering the lawn, you should be generous and not too economical.
Especially when it is dry, the lawn must be watered for a sufficient period of time,
until the first puddles form
and the ground is already muddy.
In this way, the water really penetrates to the root and does not just remain on the surface.
This is how you test whether the lawn has been watered for a sufficient period of time:
Cut out a square piece of grass
with a spade
It is best to choose an inconspicuous spot at the edge of the lawn.
Now measure how deep the water has penetrated underground.
The soil should be
about 15 cm deep wet
After the measurement, simply put the piece of grass back into the lawn.
How often to water the lawn?
Blow up the lawn every day?
This doesn't have to be the case if you water it sufficiently.
However, how often you have to water the lawn depends on the type of soil.
While sandy soils should be watered twice a week for about one to two hours, vigorous watering once a week
is sufficient for harder soils
, as they store the water better.
Newly sown lawns
Newly sown lawns
should be watered with sufficient water every day for at least two to three weeks, and even four times a day if it is dry.
What is the water consumption?
You can easily calculate how much water your lawn sprinkler uses.
As a rule of thumb: light floors require 12 to 15 liters of water per square meter, with
very solid floors you should calculate between 15 and 20 liters of water per square meter.
By the way:
After weeding, you should not water the lawn at all, as the remaining parts will sprout again with the help of the water.
However, you can still make all sorts of good things for your garden from the plucked weeds.
If the dandelion in the lawn is a thorn in your side, you can get rid of it with a simple home remedy.
