On October 1st, the upper earnings limit for mini-jobs is to rise from 450 to 520 euros per month – at the same time as the minimum wage is raised.

The

upper earnings limit for mini-jobs

is to rise from 450 to 520 euros per month on October 1st.

Simultaneously with the increase in the minimum wage to twelve euros.

The coalition agreement says about the mini-jobs: In future, the mini-job limit will be based on a weekly working time of ten hours at minimum wage conditions.

It will be increased accordingly with the increase in the minimum wage to 520 euros.

And the

upper limit

for midi jobs is also set to rise from the current EUR 1,300 to EUR 1,600 on October 1st.

Registration at the Minijob-Zentrale

For example, in order not to employ

domestic

help on the black market, they must be registered with the

mini-job center

 .

The quickest way to register is online.

The mini-job center then takes on most of the employer's obligations, described the German Press Agency (dpa), "for example, calculating and collecting taxes and reporting on accident insurance".

The so-called midi jobs, on the other hand, are “employments that are subject to social security contributions, for which the health insurance companies are responsible and not the mini job center,” as the blog of the mini job center says.

The upper earnings limit for mini-jobbers is currently EUR 450

Mini jobs are in demand – the upper earnings limit is to rise from 450 to 520 euros per month on October 1st.

What does the upper earnings limit for the

hourly wage of mini

-jobbers mean in concrete terms?

Here is an example: If someone currently earns 11 euros per hour, they can – according to the current regulation – work a maximum of 40 hours per month so that they do not exceed the 450 euro limit.

Statutory minimum wage from October at 12 euros

Meanwhile, the statutory minimum wage is being raised in stages: it is currently €9.82 per hour, but it is expected to rise to €10.45

by July 1st .

On October 1, 2022, the level of the lower wage limit should finally rise once to

12 euros

outside of the usual increase  steps.

The increase in the minimum wage also has corresponding consequences for mini-jobbers.

"Because of the minimum hourly wage, mini-jobbers can only work a certain number of hours per month so that they remain mini-jobbers," as the Techniker Krankenkasse informs on its website.

"If they work more, they could exceed the 450 euro limit - the employment would then be subject to social security contributions."

What does a mini-job mean for retirement?

You should also think about old-

age provision

: the time in a mini-job is later included in the minimum insurance period for a pension.

This applies both to the old-age pension and to a possible disability and survivor's pension.

Mini-jobbers who still want to forgo the payment of contributions can apply to their employer for exemption from compulsory insurance.

The exemption is binding until the end of the employment relationship, as the dpa further describes.
