A wave off the coast of Brittany in France killed a couple and their 12-year-old child.
Three other children of the couple survived the accident near Plogoff on Thursday evening unharmed, as reported by the broadcaster France Info with reference to the prefecture.
According to the information, around a hundred rescue workers were looking for the victims.
The family was walking across a public dike near the Pointe du Raz, a rocky cape, when they were likely caught in an unusually high wave, sources said.
However, there was no particularly problematic weather situation, although there is always a danger from the sea, as the prefecture announced.
A preliminary investigation is to clarify with the help of witness statements how the accident could have happened.
The family is said to be from the region.
