A new study shows that more and more women are directing. But parity is still a long way off. Equality between women and men could be achieved on ZDF in 2024 and on ARD in 2027.

One can be happy for the first time: German cinema and television films are increasingly being directed by women.

This emerges from a report on directing practice in television and cinema, which was presented on Friday at the University of Rostock.

However, those responsible judged that parity was still a long way off.

The proportion of female directors at ARD and ZDF in 2020 was around 29 percent - in 2010 it was 11 percent.

Equality between women and men is therefore possible with this development at ZDF in two years, at ARD in 2027. In the cinema it could be 2026/2027.

Streaming providers lag behind

In addition to the cinema, fictional films from German television programs that were broadcast for the first time in 2019 and 2020 between 6 p.m. and midnight were examined.

The offers of the streaming providers were new to the study.

According to studies, they are lagging behind somewhat when it comes to the proportion of women: in 2019 it was around 14 percent, in 2020 around 25 percent.

The seventh edition of the diversity report goes on to say that female directors are now increasingly producing after 8 p.m. and in programs longer than 60 minutes.

The increase is also visible in the case of “Tatort” and “Polizeiruf 110”: the proportion of women directing there rose to around 38 percent in 2020 – the year before it was 20 percent.
