At Lidl and Co. you can no longer just buy banal things like rolls or toilet paper.

The discounter now has a car on offer.

We explain what's behind it.

Neckarsulm/Munich - Anyone looking for a new car can currently find what they are looking for at Lidl: the discounter has a noteworthy campaign on offer until the end of June, which enables a mobile vehicle with an electric drive.

However, this is not about buying a new car, rather it is about a relatively young mobility concept: car subscriptions.

The electric car Nissan Leaf is offered as part of the cooperation with a West German company (“Like2drive”).

As one would expect from Lidl, the campaign brings with it a price advantage: 279 euros instead of 329 euros means a saving of 50 euros per month - that sounds like a bargain.

The country's second-largest discounter reports total savings of 600 euros over a period of twelve months.

The deal also includes a mileage of 10,000 kilometers per year.

The auto-subscription campaign can be carried out via the Lidl app, where there is also a discount code that is used to process the order.

Lidl: car bargains at the discounter?

Not necessarily

But is the Nissan Leaf deal at Lidl really a worthwhile affair?

Let's get to the bottom of it: On the one hand, the Japanese is not a brand new electric car, it is a 2018 model - and a battery capacity of 40 kWh.

150 hp and a range of almost 280 kilometers can be expanded from the point of view of the year 2022.

However, that alone would not be an obstacle, because an e-car does not have to be brand new to meet normal requirements.

Performance and range are also sufficient to get from A to B pragmatically and quickly.

After considering the financial aspect, the signs change: due to rising car purchase prices (and fuel and electricity costs), alternative purchase models such as leasing or car sharing are enjoying growing popularity.

The

Efahrer.com

portal analyzed the Lidl offer (apparently valid until June 26) - and came to a verdict that raises doubts.

Because if you need a new car for a longer period of time, the car subscription is less suitable.

Here, those people who opt for leasing would be better off.

Using the example of the Nissan Leaf, the specialist portal comes to the conclusion that leasing this model would be another 90 euros cheaper per month.

This only applies to private customers - if you register a car commercially, you would obviously save even more money.

Lidl car?

Leasing might be the better alternative

As the portal explains, leasing deals are possible with the Leaf - which has meanwhile become the most popular electric car in the world - and cost little more than 100 euros a month.

However, certain maintenance costs are eliminated with the car subscription, which cost additional money with the financing alternative.

Overall, however, it is important to be quick with the Lidl offer: "We have around 50 orders per day," quotes

A serious advantage: While there are currently extremely long delivery times for many new cars (especially electric cars), the Lidl deal probably does not have to wait until the vehicle is usable.

The processing is carried out simply by smartphone and without much effort.

Another plus point for the discounter: Electricity can be refueled free of charge at several hundred of the company's German locations.
