Wasps can be quite obtrusive and disturb a relaxing evening in the garden at home.
You can drive the animals away with small home remedies.
Wasps are active from the beginning of May to the end of September, but especially in July and August they buzz around in our gardens.
This can be annoying, especially when sunbathing on the terrace or at a garden party with friends.
The animals are under nature protection - but there are still tips that you can use to keep the pests away from you.
Drive away wasps - with water spray
According to the Landesbund für Vogelschutz (LBV), the most effective method of repelling wasps is water: simply put it in a spray bottle and spray it on the insects as soon as they approach.
The wasps think it's raining and return to their nest
.
But be careful: the spray bottle should be thoroughly cleaned beforehand so that there are no more cleaning agent residues.
Irritant liquids can seriously harm wasps.
Lemons, oranges & Co.: These scents make wasps flee
Wasps love sugar and sweet foods and will happily eat them - to keep the insects away, you should scare them away with a small counterattack.
The insects don't like certain scents at all.
These include, among other things, the smell of
lemons and oranges
.
If you put
basil or cloves
on the fruit cut in half, then wasps really won't have any more fun.
The little animals cannot even smell
essential oils
such as citronella, tea tree oil or clove oil – just like
coffee
.
For the last scent you can light coffee beans or coffee powder on a fireproof surface.
However, the smell is very penetrating and could scare away the guests from the terrace.
Make a dummy wasp nest with a paper bag
Whether this tip actually works is hotly debated - but it's definitely worth a try: A crumpled
up, brown paper bag
that is hung up outside is supposed to scare away wasps.
Supposedly, the insects fear that it is a wasp's nest in which another swarm is at home.
To be on the safe side, they make off, they say.
