Digital vaccination certificate: What the warning in the Corona app means

With the CovPass app, a full corona or booster vaccination can be verified.

However, a warning from the app could lead to problems.

Kassel – At the moment, the digital vaccination card only needs to be used rarely.

The 3G and 2G rules have largely been abolished in retail and gastronomy, although Health Minister Karl Lauterbach is said to have already presented a master plan with corona rules for autumn.

Then the CovPass or Corona warning app could be used more frequently again.

But if you look at your digital vaccination card now, the app could warn you: The vaccination certificate is about to expire.

Don't panic: This does not mean that the vaccinations lose their validity, only the digital certificate.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) states on the website of the CovPass app that the technical validity of the digital corona vaccination certificate expires after 365 days - i.e. one year.

The app will inform users 28 days in advance.

The digital corona vaccination pass is expiring: Robert Koch Institute announces update for CovPass app

In order for the vaccination status to continue to be proven, the certificates must be renewed.

Users do not have to do anything for the time being: The RKI has already announced an update that should make it possible to renew proof of vaccinations received with one of the corona vaccines.

This should happen before the first certificates expire.

Uploading the vaccination certificate to the Corona app is often not that easy.

But there is another warning in the CovPass app: the request to renew the vaccination certificate.

According to the RKI, the reason for this is that since February, some certificates throughout the EU that prove a second vaccination are no longer issued with the number 2/2, but with the number 2/1.

This applies to the following cases:

  • People who have received a second vaccination after a primary vaccination with Johnson & Johnson.

  • People who have had a second vaccination (booster) after a recovery and a first vaccination.

Corona vaccination certificate expires: Varying duration depending on the number of vaccinations

In these cases, the deposited vaccination certificate does not correspond to the current EU specifications for numbering the certificates.

There is also an update for this, with which the vaccination certificate can be adjusted.

In this way, the booster vaccination can be recognized when the CovPass-Check app is checked.

The certificate can be renewed three times within a year.

People who are only basic immunized - i.e. have received two corona vaccinations - have to pay a little more attention to their corona vaccination certificate.

According to the RKI, the EU has set a uniform recognition period for the digital EU certificate of at least 270 days.

That has been the case since February.

This has no effect on people who have already received the booster vaccination.

The vaccination certificate for the basic immunization is also valid indefinitely for under-18s.

Anyone who only uses their corona vaccination with the certificate in Germany does not have to worry either: they are valid indefinitely.

When entering Germany, however, the digital vaccination certificate from the EU for the basic immunization is displayed as invalid from the 271st day.

This means that in order to be able to enter the country, a valid test or proof of recovery or a certificate of a booster vaccination must be presented.

Under 18s are exempt from this rule.

When traveling abroad, different rules apply, depending on the regulations of the respective country.
