Will the first octopus farm open next year?
In Spain, a multinational specialized in the trade of seafood products is betting on it.
Touting a "world first", the company Nueva Pescanova hopes to produce 3,000 tons of octopus per year for the national and international market, thanks to intensive farming located near the port of Las Palmas, in the Canary Islands.
It is thus ahead of Mexican, Japanese and Australian firms which have been working on a similar project in recent years.
With facilities of 52,000 m², according to El Pais, the mollusk, raised in exploitation, would be "protected" from overfishing in the wild, defends the company.
