One chocolate variety is currently the subject of an urgent recall.

Consumption can lead to kidney or liver damage.

Kassel – After chocolate products from Ferrero recently had to be recalled, another chocolate manufacturer is now affected by a current recall.

A whole milk chocolate from myChoco GmbH could have a high aflatoxin content.

According to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL), so-called aflatoxins are mold toxins that can form in seeds and nuts.

The chocolate recall concerns the following product:

product designation

Milk chocolate (cocoa: 31% minimum) with almonds, honey and sea salt, 180g

Manufacturer

myChoco GmbH

best before date

June 08, 2023

Batch number

22067

Chocolate recall: the product was sold at Edeka, Rewe and Globus

In case of doubt, the consumption of aflatoxins can lead to liver and kidney damage – if the toxin is ingested over a longer period of time.

As myChoco states in an official press release, acute health impairments are rarely observed.

Nevertheless, the manufacturer advises against consuming the contaminated chocolate.

Specifically, it's about the almonds that are contained in the milk chocolate.

These show a high content of aflatoxin B1 and the total aflatoxin B1+B2+G1+G2.

According to the LGL, aflatoxin B1 in particular is highly toxic.

If the toxin is taken over a long period of time, the immune system can be weakened and the genetic material can be damaged.

Especially people with a hepatitis B virus infection (HBV) could react very sensitively to aflatoxins.

This chocolate is currently subject to a recall.

The chocolate was sold nationwide, primarily in branches of the retail chains Edeka, Globus and Rewe and via the myChoco online shop.

Customers who bought this chocolate can return it to supermarkets by showing the receipt.

The purchase price will then be refunded.

Other chocolate products are also affected by a recall, there is a risk of salmonella poisoning.
