For motorists in Germany, the forest of signs is often opaque and wild, but everyone should know the priority signs in particular.

Whether on the motorway, in the city or in the country - rare traffic signs always put question marks on the faces of drivers in Germany.

Whether it's orange arrows on the freeway or yellow signs with arrows and numbers, every road user should be familiar with the signs, even if they are rare.

But it is even more important to be able to interpret all everyday signs.

According to echo24.de, it is particularly important for drivers to know all the right-of-way rules and the associated traffic signs.

Right of way rules in Germany – every driver should know these signs

There is a whole series of signs that indicate which road user has the right of way.

Knowing this is particularly important because signage always takes precedence over the normal right-before-left rule.

The exact order of precedence is as follows: The priority rule "Right before left" only applies if neither signs nor traffic lights or police officers regulate the right of way.

The latter always have the highest priority.

It is therefore particularly important for drivers to know the hand signals of the police officers.

  • Traffic sign No. 102 Intersection or T-junction with right-of-way –

This priority sign shows that the right-before-left rule applies at the next intersection and is only posted at blind spots or after priority changes.

It's a white triangle with a red border.

A black cross is emblazoned in the middle.

  • Traffic sign St. Andrew's Cross No. 201 –

St. Andrew's Crosses are located at level crossings.

The sign indicates that rail traffic has the right of way.

If the level crossing is not gated, road users should look to the right and left on the crossing road to make sure that no train is approaching.

The signs are large white crosses with red ends.

  • Traffic sign No. 205: Give way!

This traffic sign indicates that road users must give way at the upcoming crossing/junction.

The correct behavior here is: Approach the crossing area slowly and wait for the road to clear.

It's a white triangle with a red border standing on top.

  • Traffic sign No. 206 Stop!

    Give way!

This sign indicates that road users must stop at the upcoming intersection and give way.

To do this, they must stop at the white line and wait there for 3 seconds.

This traffic sign is the classic stop sign.

  • Traffic Sign No. 208 Priority for Oncoming Traffic –

This sign indicates that oncoming traffic has priority.

It is located at lane narrowings, for example due to construction sites or barriers.

It is a white circle with a red border - inside it there are two arrows.

A red one pointing up and a black one pointing down.

  • Traffic sign No. 301 Give way -

This sign means that road users at the upcoming intersection or junction have one-time right of way and do not have to give way at the next intersection.

It is a white triangle with a red border, in the center there is a thick black arrow with a thin horizontal stripe.

  • Traffic Sign No. 306 Priority Road -

This sign indicates to the motorist driving towards that he/she has the right of way.

It's a white square standing on top.

In the center is a yellow, smaller square.

If a road user is on a priority road, all other drivers, cyclists and motorcyclists must wait until the person with the right of way has crossed the intersection.

  • Road Sign No. 307 End of Priority Road -

This sign indicates that the Priority Road ends.

From now on, the right-before-left rule or right of way rule applies, which is indicated by the following traffic signs.

The traffic sign looks like number 306, but it is crossed out.

  • Road Sign No. 308 Give Way to Oncoming Traffic –

This sign indicates give way to oncoming traffic.

It stands on the opposite side of Shield No. 208, is square, blue, with a thin white border, and shows two arrows.

One is white and facing up, the other is red and facing down.

Right of way rules in Germany – safety in the vehicle is also extremely important

Incidentally, it is not only important to know about the traffic signs - for road safety, drivers and other road users also need to know all the latest changes to the rules.

In the course of 2022, it will be particularly important to update the first aid kit.

In addition, every vehicle should have a regular TÜV inspection – not just to avoid fines.

It is therefore a must for every motorist to be able to read the sticker correctly.

In addition, every driver should know how to put on the seat belt correctly.

Fatal mistakes can also be made here, which can have dire consequences in the event of an accident.
