The long distance between home and the institute did not prevent blind student Moaz Fuhaisan from attending vocational education sessions at the Institute of Special Education for the Blind in Damascus.

Heisan, who lives in Eastern Ghouta and studies with 160 students at the institute, explains in his statement to SANA how happy he is to learn the knitting profession as a source of livelihood for him in the future and to be able to rely on himself and fill his spare time.

Student Abdul Hadi Hassa, who is trained in making accessories, talks about his future ambition to work in acting despite his disability, pointing out that learning a craft is easy if there is will and determination, as he expresses his happiness with the completion of a group of textile pieces and ornamental trees during the last training period.

The institute includes two sections, according to its director, Nada Abu Al-Shamat, the first section is educational, up to 18 years old, and the second section is for vocational training from 15 to 35 years old, noting that the period of training for professions reaches two years, after which the student obtains a certificate in the profession that qualifies him to enter the labor market.

Abu al-Shamat added: The students receive their education according to the Ministry of Education curriculum, which is printed in Braille, in addition to a set of audio computer programs that help teachers deliver information in a faster way, pointing out that the institute provides a range of services for students, including transportation for them.

The teacher, Najd Haider, who trains students in the knitting craft, pointed out that teaching people with disabilities manual occupations needs to simplify the methods by using the method of touch and counting to implement the textile pieces and the participation of students in implementing ideas for the shapes they want.

For her part, the trainer in the craft of accessories, Saba Al-Ali, indicated that the students responded greatly during the implementation of the lessons, and they showed a great desire to learn, adding: The products they manufacture are marketed and sold in a group of exhibitions with the aim of helping and encouraging them to develop themselves.

A number of the students’ families noted the importance of their children learning a profession that could be a source of livelihood for them in the future. Nour Al-Fahmy, the mother of one of the students, said: It is necessary to teach people with this disability a craft to fill their spare time and deliver a message to them that they are capable of being people. producers in society.
