Beware motorists - from July 6th speed enforcement will be mandatory in the European Union.

In the future, an assistant will help the driver to keep to the speed.

Munich - He always has the permitted speed in his field of vision and shows it to the driver.

If you are driving too fast, it warns you with visual and acoustic signals - meaning the "intelligent speed assistant" or "Intelligent Speed Adaptations" (ISA), which will soon be available in all cars.

At least that is what the EU regulation 2019/2144 provides.

Because from July 6, 2022, numerous new rules for road traffic will apply in the EU.

The draft for more safety on Europe's roads was already adopted in 2019 and is now coming into force for vehicle types newly launched on the market.

From July 7, 2024, all new cars must have this driving assistant.

If you are driving too fast, the speed assistant warns you acoustically in the car.

ISA Assistant: Navigation service provides data as guide values

The purpose of ISA is to alert the driver that he is speeding, via the accelerator pedal or specific, appropriate and effective feedback.

The valid limits come from the traffic sign recognition and the navigation system.

The system is activated when the ignition is switched on, but can also be deactivated manually.

In passive mode, the driver still receives information about the speed limits.

If the system is active, you can change the speed at any time.

ISA assistant in the car: help to improve safety on the roads

According to the website of the European Commission, the introduction of ISA is intended to reduce "the number of collisions on Europe's roads".

In addition, Europeans should be protected from poor air quality and climate change and new mobility solutions should be offered that defend the competitiveness of the European automotive industry.

This emerges from a report by the European Charter for Road Safety.

Nevertheless, there is criticism of the intelligent brakes.

Recognition and card errors are the weak points of all ISA candidates that the ADAC has tested.

The ADAC therefore recommends not blindly relying on such an assistant.

If there is lightning, the driver is responsible in any case.

In addition, drivers could simply override ISA by pressing harder on the gas pedal, thereby overriding warnings.

ISA Assistant: Drivers also have to use technology

With ISA, the EU wants to prevent the death of up to 25,000 people per year in road traffic in the future, as well as around 140,000 serious injuries.

In Germany alone, around a third of traffic fatalities are due to accidents caused by excessive speed, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office.

So it remains to be seen whether the ISA assistance system will have a positive and lasting effect on road safety and whether the drivers will actually use the technology.
