From July 2022, an emergency brake assistant will be mandatory in new vehicles.
This is stipulated by the EU regulation 2019/2144.
Munich ‒ Assistants are seen as the right hand of the boss.
They usually act inconspicuously in the background and relieve the bosses of unpleasant tasks.
In a figurative sense, such a task is now assigned to the emergency brake assistant in the car.
It independently recognizes dangerous situations and brakes the vehicle – even if the driver is unable to act.
This system uses radar, lidar and camera systems in the vehicle as well as data from the control unit.
If the external conditions for correct use are not created, the system even deactivates itself temporarily.
The driver receives a message in the cockpit and can also "override" the system at any time.
The manual deactivation of the complete emergency brake assistant and its acoustic warnings are also possible
possible - after restarting the vehicle, the system is automatically active again.
In the future, the emergency brake assistant in cars should also help to prevent accidents involving cyclists on the road.

EU regulation: emergency brake assistant will apply from next July
The emergency brake assistant is one of eight assistance systems that will be mandatory from July.
This is prescribed by the EU regulation with the awkward name “
Regulation on the type approval of motor vehicles and motor vehicle trailers as well as systems, components and independent technical units for these vehicles with regard to their general safety and the protection of vehicle occupants and vulnerable road users
”.
It has been in force since November 2019.
The reason for the EU regulation is therefore the desire for fewer traffic accidents and more safety on the road.
It will apply from July 6th and regulates the mandatory installation of assistance systems for vehicle manufacturers.
A total of eight additional devices must be on board from this point in time in all newly developed cars.
From July 2024, no new cars may be registered without the additional systems.
This applies not only to passenger cars, but also to trucks and buses.
EU and traffic 2022: These assistance systems will soon be in all cars:
Intelligent speed assistant
emergency braking assistant
emergency brake light
Emergency Lane Departure Warning
Device for installing an alcohol immobilizer
Fatigue and attention warning
reversing assistant
Tire pressure monitoring (mandatory since 2014)
Seat belt warning system (mandatory since 2019)
Accident data storage (black box)

EU regulation: Brake protection also planned for cyclists and pedestrians
For the deadlines July 6, 2022 and July 7, 2024, the emergency brake assistant must recognize obstacles and moving vehicles in front of the car.
In a second phase, the system must then also be able to react to cyclists and pedestrians.
A date has not yet been set here.
And just like in real life, you have to ask yourself what the little helpers in the vehicle do.
Can drivers in future confidently lean back in their seats and rely on the technology in their cars?
Or is he better off keeping his hands where they belong when driving - on the steering wheel.
Because according to ADAC, various emergency brake assistants are not yet technically designed to brake because of pedestrians and cyclists.
