According to the recordings, the smoke could still be seen from a distance: In the Mallorcan Arenal, not far from the Ballermann party mile, a restaurant caught fire on Friday.

Apparently because a German tour group was partying on a neighboring hotel balcony and threw cigarettes onto a terrace roof.

Now the thirteen suspects are in custody.

As the local "Mallorca Zeitung" reports, the vacation for the members of a bowling club ended only shortly after it began.

Accordingly, the group only arrived at the hotel around eleven o'clock on Friday, but then had to be patient with the check-in.

At around 2 p.m. the men came back drunk and continued partying on the balcony.

At around 3:20 p.m., the fire finally broke out in the neighboring bar "Why Not Mallorca".

His German landlady had already expressed her horror to the newspaper on Friday.

“I don't understand how people can do such a thing.

What is going on in the minds of these young people?” said the operator Alice Klotz accordingly.

The outdoor area of "Why Not" was completely destroyed, the damage amounted to at least 150,000 euros.

According to media reports, a man and a young girl were also slightly injured in the fire.

According to media reports, the men belong to a bowling club (name: "Stram am Tisch") near Münster.

The Majorcan police initially did not want to comment on the exact origin of the accused.

As the dpa news agency reports with reference to “preliminary” information from the city of Münster, at least some of them are said to be members of the local volunteer fire brigade.

The men were arrested by the police at their hotel after the fire.

They are suspected of arson.

On Saturday, the responsible investigating judge in Palma ordered the tourists to be held in custody without the right to bail.

The accused are said to have exercised their right to refuse to testify when they were questioned by the judge.

The judge assumes “joint responsibility”, it said.

The police in Palma initially did not provide information on the origin of the German tourists.

Those involved face lengthy prison terms

Now the suspected arsonists face longer prison sentences.

If they are charged and found guilty of negligent arson, the vacationers on the Spanish Mediterranean island can be sentenced to between one and three years in prison, as Spanish lawyers announced on Monday at the request of the dpa news agency.

According to media reports, most Germans are between 24 and 29 years old.

In the case of intentional arson, prison sentences of up to six years are provided, it said.

If the court is of the opinion that human lives have been endangered, the verdict could also be significantly harsher.
