Due to massive tornado damage in Paderborn and Lippstadt, several schools and daycare centers in both cities will remain closed on Monday.

It is not yet clear when they will reopen.

The municipalities announced that safe access to the buildings had not yet been guaranteed.

The clean-up and repair work in the affected cities will continue everywhere this week.

In Lippstadt, five daycare centers and seven schools will remain closed on Monday, including two high schools.

"In view of the extent of the damage that we are seeing at the various locations, it is currently unthinkable that classes can take place there in the next few days," said Mayor Arne Moritz (CDU).

"There are still dangers from both the buildings themselves and the environment that cannot be completely eliminated within a short time."

Firefighters use drones

According to the city administration, five schools in Paderborn will remain completely or partially closed for the time being, including a high school.

A number of roads are still closed there.

The fire brigade in Paderborn uses drones to investigate whether there is still a danger from falling parts of roofs.

The police are now increasingly on patrol in front of destroyed buildings, it said.

Several tornadoes caused massive destruction in various places in North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday.

In Paderborn alone, 43 people were injured, 13 of them seriously.

At the beginning of the week there is a threat of local storms again.

The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of severe thunderstorms with heavy rain and squalls that will move across NRW from Monday afternoon.

Tornadoes cannot be ruled out in the south.

During the night of Tuesday, the thunderstorms should slowly subside and move to the north-east.
