Wake up from the dream: A proud wedding in prime time says nothing | Israel today

Keshet picked up the gauntlet and married a gay couple in prime time, but the road to full equality of rights is still long • Activist Yoav Meir explains why it is precisely now that the LGBT community is not allowed to rest on laurels

Two men got married on Saturday night on the show "Wedding at First Sight," you must have heard about it.

Groom Guy and Matan managed to evoke strong feelings among viewers and thousands of reactions on social media.

There is no doubt that the move by the show's producers is a brave move.

Even in the world not all the counterparts have broadcast a proud wedding, there is a certain risk and a bet on the sympathy of the audience.

But, it is important to clarify something very basic.

LGBT people have been getting married in Israel for years, although the ceremony in Israel is without legal validity, but the ceremony in the program is also like that, so there is really no groundbreaking news here, just a reflection of reality.

What annoys me most is the sense of superiority of the heteronormative society, which feels ownership of the institution of marriage and feels good about itself that it allows LGBT people to take part in the celebration.

Let's momentarily be updated, no man, regardless of his sexual orientation, needs confirmation of his love from any other person.

I as a gay man am not looking for approval from the company that will allow me to have a relationship with my partner, it is his and my choice only and no one is allowed to express an opinion at all.

"They deserve it too," many people said in response to the proud wedding.

Seemingly it is a sentence that has a good intention, but as soon as it is written, doubt is immediately created.

Who are you to decide whether I deserve it or not?

The proud community has come a long way and continues to go a long way, but we as human beings must not let other people decide whether we or he deserves because every person deserves to be loved and to be loved.

What really stood out in the episode was the support of the parents and families, they had no doubt at all, and the only thing that led them was the happiness of their son.

I think many families can learn from the situation, after all we are all different and our children are human beings who are different from us, and different from what we expected for them.

There is no time to be in euphoria.

It is very important that the proud community understands that more than the reception and the TV hug, the most significant thing is legislation.

After all, at the end of the 42 days of filming, of all the couples, the only couple who will not be able to marry according to the law in the State of Israel are Matan and Guy.

If they want to be recognized in Israel as husband and wife, they will have to fly abroad, get married there and then register with the Ministry of the Interior. This is our real struggle as a community and as a democratic and pluralistic society - full equality of rights.
