Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co. could soon run out of mustard.

Due to the war in Ukraine, bottlenecks in the supply of raw materials threaten.

Munich – The war in Ukraine has already led to bottlenecks in discounters such as Aldi, Lidl and Netto for sunflower oil, flour, butter and some other products in Germany.

Consumers currently looking for mustard as a pick-me-up on store shelves are doing so in vain.

And that in the middle of the barbecue season, when sausages only really taste good with the emulsified paste.

The problem: A large part of the mustard seed processed in this country comes from Ukraine and Russia.

The food association Kulinaria, which specializes in mustard, said in March that the stocks in the silos of the German manufacturers would last for a few more months.

However, the war in Ukraine and the sanctions against Russia would have a direct impact on European agricultural markets and supply flows of raw materials from the affected areas.

Mustard alarm in Germany: Association warned of shortages in March

The association warned in March that there is already a shortage of raw materials for sunflower oil and mustard seed, which will become even worse in the coming weeks.

This would even lead to complete delivery failures.

This prediction has now actually come true.

Customers are now increasingly standing in front of empty mustard shelves.

In principle, mustard seeds are also grown in this country, but only to a very manageable extent.

The quantities of the German farmers "would not be nearly enough for our mustard production," explains Markus Weck, general manager of the food association Kulinaria in the

world

.

Mustard alert: third largest supplier is Canada

The third largest exporter of mustard after Russia and Ukraine is Canada.

According to Weck, mustard seeds were received here at short notice by airmail, but “at the highest prices we have ever paid for raw materials.” This supply chain has now also been closed: “There are currently no more mustard seeds to buy on the world market.”

The mustard manufacturer Thomy from Nestlé, on the other hand, has made provisions for this year.

"For us, the shortage does not apply because we get our mustard seeds from Canada ,

" says a spokeswoman for Nestlé AG to

Bild.de.

Therefore, the supply is secured at the previous year's level.

Unimaginable for many.

The mustard manufacturer Händlmaier has already shut down the first machines and consequently reduced production so that it can probably remain able to deliver until August.

Because two thirds of the mustard seeds that Händlmaier processes come from the Ukraine and Russia, says Franz Wunderlich, Managing Director of the Regensburg company, in the

Mittelbayerische Zeitung

.

The markets have been swept empty, with the result that prices have quadrupled and quintupled.

Wunderlich cannot predict what effects this will have on prices in the food retail sector.

The rise in the price of basic foodstuffs at Aldi, Lidl and Co is already causing dismay among consumers.

The prices for sunflower oil, salt, oatmeal, pasta, toast and minced meat have risen sharply in recent weeks.

and an end to the price spiral is not in sight for the time being.

If you don't want to do without the hot spices when barbecuing in summer, you can fall back on good alternatives - such as dips made from horseradish or wasabi, a green water radish from Japan that is also often served as an accompaniment to sushi.
