(ANSA) - ROME, MAY 24 - In 2021 there was a new peak in executions of the death penalty in the world after a year of strong slowdown due to the restrictions against Covid: 579 in 18 countries are known - with a primacy of Iran with 314. A dramatic rebound compared to the previous year, but - more encouragingly - declining over the long term, so much so that it represents the second lowest total number of executions recorded since 2010. These are some of the data released by AmnestyInternational in its annual Report on the death penalty in the world , of which he released some advances in a note.

The known executions, however, could be the tip of the iceberg compared to the unknown ones, which Amnesty estimates to be thousands, of countries that hide the activity of the boia, among which China, North Korea and Vietnam stand out.

A sad fact is the executions used as an instrument of political expression, with the new figure of about 90 executions in Burma under martial law imposed by the military putschists, in power since February 1 of the previous year.
