The magazine Öko-Test took a close look at sunscreens for children.

The good news for parents: Most of the 21 creams tested are recommendable.

But some rattle through.

Munich - The good news first: According to Öko-Test, most sunscreens for children do not contain any questionable UV filters.

The testers recommend children's sunscreens with chemical UV filters or the mineral filters titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.

Overall, the sunscreens performed better in the study than they did two years ago, according to the testers.

Two-thirds of the products were rated “good” or “very good” (Öko-Test issue 6/2022).

Sunscreens for children: winners and losers in the test

Since the skin of babies and children is particularly thin, too much UV exposure or sunburn in childhood can increase the risk of developing major cancer later.

Protection against the sun's rays is therefore essential.

According to the Öko-Test, most of the 21 sunscreens for children with a sun protection factor of 50 or 50+ do well.

  • Sunscreen for children: these are the test winners for 2022

  • Among the

    certified natural cosmetic creams

(also: organic sun creams), these two "very good" products were test winners:

  • Alverde Kids Sensitive Sun Balm 50

    , available from dm

Lavera Kids Sensitive Sun Lotion 50

, available from Ecco Verde, Shop Apotheke or DocMorris, among others

  • Among the

    conventional sun creams

, seven products were even able to convince with "very good", including:

  • Avène Children's Sun Spray SPF 50+

, available from DocMorris or Shop Apotheke

Hipp Babysanft Sonnenmilch Ultra Sensitiv 50+

Ladival For Children Sun Protection Milk 50+

, available e.g. from DocMorris or Shop Apotheke

    Paediprotect Sonnenspray 50+

“This time, with nine 'very good', we can recommend significantly more creams than two years ago.

The laboratories we commissioned did not find any problematic preservatives, nor did the perfumed products contain highly allergenic or other health-critical fragrances," said the testers in their current test verdict.

However, four sunscreens for children still contained questionable UV filters.

Silver chloride was even found in one product, which has no place in products for children under the age of three.

A total of five sunscreens for children even rattled through the test.

  • Sunscreen for children: These were the losers

  • Among the five products that Öko-Test expressly advises against were creams that attracted attention because of questionable chemical UV filters and/or contained other critical ingredients such as paraffins, silicones, PEG (derivatives), microplastics or benzophenone, which for various reasons To be criticized.

  • A "

    deficient

    " received among other things:

  • Eucerin Sensitive Protect Kids Sun Spray SPF 50+

    La Roche-Posay Anthelios Dermo-Pediatrics 50+ Lotion

    Rossmann-Creme Sunozon Kids Sonnenmilch

Sunscreens for children: UV filters make the difference when applying sunscreen

With sun creams, a distinction is made between mineral and chemical UV filters.

When it comes to mineral filters, which are mainly found in natural cosmetics, the substance titanium dioxide, whose reputation has recently suffered greatly, is currently being discussed.

According to the eco-testers, titanium dioxide may no longer be used in food from August due to health concerns.

In sun sprays it is already banned.

The difference between chemical and mineral UV filters can often be seen when applying sunscreen.

Mineral filters are more difficult to smear on the skin, resulting in what is known as the “whitening effect”.

According to the eco-testers, this phenomenon can have a good side, especially in children.

In this way, parents can determine whether they forgot to touch the tip of their child's nose or cheek when applying cream.

However, there are also UV filters that are considered questionable.

These include octocrylene and homosalate, both of which may have hormonal effects.

Four of the tested children's sunscreens contained these UV filters, for which "Öko-Test" deducted points.

Incidentally, the Stiftung Warentest is also testing how sensitive children's skin can best be protected from the sun's rays.

It was mainly inexpensive products that passed the test with "very good" and "good".
