Chocolate ice cream is very popular with both adults and children.
So it's no wonder that Öko-Test has taken on this popular product in
time for the ice cream season and examined 20 chocolate ice creams
from different suppliers in a test - including own brands of discounters and supermarkets, organic products and well-known brands such as Landliebe, Ben & Jerry's and Movenpick.
“Many products impress with content and taste.
However, we cannot dismiss the chocolate ice cream without criticism,” writes Öko-Test magazine in its June 2022 issue.
Chocolate ice cream in the test: many recommended, but 2 brands with mineral oil components
So the good news: Öko-Test finds hardly anything to complain about in most of the products examined.
Many products are recommended.
So there are no problems with the
fat pollutants
3-MCPD and glycidol.
In addition, it is positively noted that the underside chocolate ice cream flavors really contain what is written on the packaging, for example there is no fiddling with undeclared cheap vegetable fats.
However, the commissioned laboratory found
mineral oil components twice
discovered, namely petroleum saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH).
Carcinogenic compounds can belong to the MOAH group.
MOSH accumulate in organs such as the liver and it is not yet known how harmful this is in the long term.
Finding MOSH and MOAH is a common problem in food, Öko-Test also found such contamination in sunflower oil, muesli and spaghetti, among other things.
Possible explanations for the occurrence of mineral oil in food could be waste paper packaging, lubricants used in production or molding, rolling or adhesives.
In the case of chocolate ice cream, mineral oil components could be found in various ingredients, such as coconut fat, cocoa and chocolate.
Chocolate ice cream in the Öko-Test: many discount brands "very good"
The test is mostly positive.
Öko-Test was able to award the
grade “very good”
14 times and the grade “good” three times.
Test winners include:
product | Price per 500ml | grade |
---|---|---|
Alnatura chocolate ice cream | €2.99 | very good |
Gustavo Gusto chocolate ice cream | €4.99 | very good |
Ice cream chocolate from Gut & Billig (Edeka) | €0.90 | very good |
Yes! Chocolate ice cream with whipped cream (Rewe) | €0.90 | very good |
Rios premium chocolate ice cream from Lidl | €0.95 | very good |
Landliebe ice cream chocolate cream | €2.19 | very good |
Despite the good results in the test, Öko-Test points out that chocolate ice cream is still an unhealthy sweet and should not be eaten every day.
Even children under the age of one year, better still two years, should not eat any sugar.
Öko-Test does not recommend these chocolate ice cream brands
The
Eismann Schoko-Split ice cream fails
the Öko-Test with the grade "poor".
The reason is the particularly critical mineral oil components.
The eco-testers also found increased MOSH levels
in the ice from
Häagen-Dazs .
In addition, Öko-Test advises against consuming products with controversial additives such as carrageenan and processed Euchema algae.
These additives are suspected of triggering inflammation in the intestines.
These substances were discovered, for example, in
Ben & Jerry's
chocolate ice cream and
Bruno Gelato Cioccolato.
