Chocolate recall: health hazard, especially for people with diabetes

As the company reports, a sugar content of 3.8 grams per 100 grams of chocolate is specified on the products - but in reality there is around ten times as much sugar in the chocolate, namely 39.8 grams per 100 grams For health reasons (diabetes, among others), if you have to watch how much sugar you eat, chocolate can become a health hazard – and even life-threatening.

In patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes, eating chocolate could quickly lead to high blood sugar levels, known as hyperglycemia.

According to the German Red Cross (DRK) and the German Diabetic Association, symptoms of high blood sugar are primarily severe thirst, frequent urination, nausea, vomiting, difficult breathing and the smell of acetone from the mouth.

According to the German Diabetes Aid, hyperglycemia can also lead to so-called diabetic coma and thus become life-threatening.

The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) and the authorities of the federal states provide information about public warnings and relevant information about products on the foodwarning.de website.

According to the authorities, the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hamburg, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig-Holstein are affected by the current chocolate recall.

The products can be returned to the respective points of sale, the sale price will be refunded.
